Sheikh Sharif Ahmed

After hearing Pres. Ahmed Speak at the 64th U.N General Assembly, I'm starting to put hope back on the international community in trying to stabilize the country. Just like his predecessor, Sheikh Sharif is constantly faced with attacks from a coalition of Islamic militant groups who seek to depose the TFG. Thousands of innocent Somalis lost their lives in this current wave of violence. AMISOM troops who are still composed of Ugandan and Burundian troops are poised to face a battle hardened opposition in Al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam.

In the latest wave of attacks, Al-Shabaab suicide bombers drove their stolen U.N cruisers full of explosives and rammed AMISOM base where high level AMISOM commanders and Somali Government security officials where holding a meeting. The result, dead 17 AMISOM troops and 5 Somalis. The question is will AMISOM mandate change from peacekeeping force to peace enforcement contingent. It is obvious that there is no peace to keep in Somalia. AMISOM troops are a sitting duck waiting to be attacked.

President Sharif is still hopeful that the opposition groups will come to the mediating table. So far, the international community has thrown its full support in this moderate president. A man once in charge of the Islamic Courts is in a deadlock with his former partners and has not shown any signs of giving up hope. He is confined in Villa Somalia, perhaps the only safe spot in Mogadishu. I believe in Sheikh Sharif, just like I was a proponent of the previous TFG administration of Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed. The problems are still the same as the last year. Somalia is full of warmongers who continue to illustrate their destructive behavior. Somalis should never lose hope in their country as that is the only thing that preserve our identity. In Somalia, I believe.
